Yes, Blue Buffalo`s pet food formulas are AAFCO approved. The company has demonstrated great dedication to making sure that their products are safe and healthy for pets. Blue Buffalo dog food and cat food recipes are all formulated to meet the AAFCO nutritional guidelines.
What Is Blue Buffalo?
Blue Buffalo is natural pet food manufacturing company that was founded back in 2002 by Bill Bishop. The company has its headquarters in Wilton, Connecticut, United States.
Blue Buffalo have a variety of dog food and cat food formulas available in their product library. The recipes are all developed around natural ingredients and that makes them safe and healthy for your pets to eat.
What Is AAFCO?
AAFCO is short for the Association Of American Feed Control Officials which operates as a private non profit corporation and voluntary membership association for local, state and federal agencies.
The association has stated that their corporation feature:
- A process for defining ingredients used in animal feed and pet food.
- A forum where state agencies, federal agencies, and industry develop uniform language that states may adopt or reference in laws.
- Two meetings per year that include specialized trainings for members and industry.
AAFCO has definitely being playing a much bigger role in regulating nutritional levels for pet food products.
AAFCO Nutritional Guidelines
The main reason for AAFCO`s existence is to protect the consumer by setting labeling guidelines, ingredient requirements and nutritional requirements for animal feed.
The organization generally set nutrient profiles specifying the minimum and maximum levels of protein, fat, vitamin and mineral content of pet food.

Blue Buffalo And AAFCO
As mentioned earlier, Blue Buffalo products are all AAFCO approved but it is very essential for me to mention that AAFCO does not regulate pet food.
The United States Food And Drug Administration (FDA) is the agency responsible for regulating pet food.
Unlike AAFCO which is a voluntary organization where some committee members are representatives from some of the top brands in the pet food manufacturing business,
The FDA is a federal agency so they have the power to recall any pet food products that are causing harm to animals.
Blue Buffalo have one voluntary recall recorded by the FDA for their Blue Wilderness, Rocky Mountain Recipe and the recall reason was due to elevated levels of naturally- occurring beef thyroid hormones.
The FDA also monitor the branding and marketing messages promoted by various pet food manufacturers to make sure none is misleading and harmful to the consumer.
But the authority of the FDA does not nullify the significance of being AAFCO approved.
There is a memorandum of understanding between the FDA and AAFCO where the FDA fully recognize the role of AAFCO in regulating the nutritional levels of pet food.
So it is basically fair to say that Blue Buffalo formulas are safe for your pet since they are all AAFCO approved and only one has been voluntarily recalled as recorded by the FDA back in 2018.
